They feature Pearl's patented Graduated Tension wires with strategically positioned looser and tighter wires. The looser wires vibrate at even the slightest touch of the batter head, while the tighter wires will maintain contact with the head when you turn the volume up to 11. This means that Pearl's Ultra-Sound snare wires have a much larger dynamic range than most other snares. The I-shaped end plates create an even tension on all the snare wires,  giving you a nicely balanced sound, while still taking advantage of the extended dynamic range the Graduated Tension wires provide.
